Another crucial weekend of Premier League action is nearly with us. The battle for a Champions League place is getting tighter and tighter. It’s the same down the bottom of the table too. Here’s a look at the top games and some betting tips.
Brighton and Hove Albion v Leicester City – Saturday 6 March 8pm KO
A win for Leicester will see them returning home from the south coast in second place. For that to happen, City need to show some improved form. Just a point from their last two Premier League games and a Europa League exit. They are only five points above fifth placed Everton who have a game in hand. With Everton away at fourth placed Chelsea on Monday, the situation at the top is getting tighter and tighter.
City are still strong on their travels with no losses in their last nine away league games. Three of City’s last five away league fixtures have been drawn, they can’t afford many more.
Brighton start the weekend in 16th three points above the drop zone. They have lost their last two league games and have two points from the last four. Only one home league game has been won this season. Just twice have they managed to score more than once in a home league match, and they didn’t win either game. An away win with under 2.5 goals has odds of 9/2 at Paddy Power.
Liverpool v Fulham – Sunday 7 March – 2pm KO
Liverpool bid to end their disastrous home league run with a win over Fulham. Five straight home league wins with nine goals conceded and only a Mo Salah penalty scored. After the loss to Chelsea, they are now seventh and four points behind the final Champions League place.
They host Fulham who are still in the bottom three after losing to Tottenham on Thursday. A win at Anfield would see them escape the bottom three if Newcastle lose at West Brom earlier in the day. Their hope is that if they do lose at Anfield, Brighton and Newcastle don’t win either. Fulham haven’t scored in their last two league games.
Fulham haven’t lost any of their last seven away league matches. Five have been drawn though. A bet on under 2.5 goals looks a possible winner. That’s come up in 10 of the last 12 Fulham away games and six of the last seven home Liverpool league fixtures. You can get odds of 6/5 at Betfair on that stat coming up.
West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United – Sunday 2pm KO
West Brom are one from bottom in the Premier League. They won last weekend against Brighton but then lost to Everton on Thursday. That’s left them nine points from safety but virtually ten because of their appalling goal difference.
A home win over Newcastle United would reduce the deficit to six points. With one win in the last nine Premier League games played, it’s hard to see them escaping relegation. Yet this is a team that has drawn at the Etihad and Anfield and drew at home with Manchester United. The trouble is only once in their last 12 home league games have they scored more than once.
Newcastle United won the reverse fixture 2-1 in December. Since then though, they have had just two wins in 15 league games. Only one point has been earned from their last three matches. Away form isn’t inspiring with seven defeats in their last eight away league matches.
Only in two of their last seven Premier League games have they managed to score. They have beaten top six clubs West Ham and Everton on their travels. A win at the Hawthorns would really help them, especially if Fulham lose at Anfield. This looks another game with under 2.5 goals being scored. Odds on that happening are 8/13 at 888sport.
Manchester City v Manchester United – Sunday 7 March 4.30pm KO
Forget the title race, there isn’t one even if Manchester City lose to their neighbours Manchester United on Sunday. United are 14 points behind City going into this game and that gap is going to grow. The visitors haven’t scored in their last three league and cup games, each match ending goalless.
A 0-0 scoreline has been the final result in four of their last six away league games. Keeping City out doesn’t look likely at all. You can get odds of 1/2 at Bet365 on a City win.
