23-year-old Claims $235.4 million Powerball Jackpot

When you are only 23 years old, you have your whole life in front of you. Having a huge amount of money in the bank is usually a long-term aim. However, that’s not the case for Thomas Yi from Florida, USA. He won a $235.4 million Powerball jackpot in the March 27 draw. You could say it was a home win as the Powerball draws are held in Tallahassee, Florida.

He’s now come forward and claimed his amazing prize. Like any big winner in the Powerball draw he had a big decision to make. Accept his winnings as a one-off lump sum payment or receive it as an annuity paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years. The payments made increase by 5% each year until the full amount is paid.

The advantage of the annuity is that you know there is always going to be some payment over those 29 years. Many winners who have accepted the one-off payment and then spend it all might have wished they’d chosen this method.

Powerball Payment Choices

However, most players do go for the one-off payment, especially if not in their first flush of youth. However, despite being only 23, this winner has opted for that payment method. The Land O’Lakes resident has taken the lump-sum payment of $160,038,447.27.

It’s always going to be a bit of a shock when you win a large lottery prize. Thomas proved to be no exception to that rule and wasn’t sure he’d actually won the Powerball jackpot. “Even after matching all six numbers, I was in disbelief and took my ticket to a retailer to have it checked,” the lucky winner said.

Trust Thomas to choose a rather excitable retailer. “The clerk at the counter instantly became excited and kept repeating that I had won the $235 million Powerball jackpot. I knew then that this would be life changing.”

With over $160 million in winnings, you might think that he’ll spend his time relaxing by a pool. Well, that may well happen for a while, but this Powerball winner has other plans. He still wants to enter either the medical or business profession in the future. At least he won’t have any problems paying for the fees.

Another Big Win Coming

His win has made history as he is the youngest player in Florida to win a Powerball jackpot. His winning ticket was purchased from a Publix store in Lutz. The store is rather pleased that he did that. They will receive a $95,000 commission for selling the Powerball jackpot winning ticket.

The numbers that made Thomas a multi-millionaire were: 06-14-38-39-65 and the Powerball 06. Not a selection dominated by birthdays or anniversaries.

It looks as if another big win is on its way soon. The next Powerball draw is on Wednesday April 28 with a $116 million top prize (cash value $80.6 million).
