$1.337 Billion Mega Millions Jackpot Finally Claimed

Sometimes a big lottery winner takes a while to claim their windfall. That was the case with the massive $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot win on July 29. After nearly two months, the winners have finally come forward to claim their prize.

The $1.337 billion jackpot was the third highest in American lottery history. The winning ticket was sold at a Speedway gas station in Des Plaines. That’s a suburb of Chicago in the US state of Illinois. Two individuals, who both wish to remain anonymous, have been revealed as the very lucky winners.

There wasn’t a lot of pressure on the winners to come forward. They had a year to claim their prize and another 60 days to decide how to receive their prize

When a Mega Millions jackpot is won, the winners have two ways of receiving their prize. Rather than accepting their win as an annuity (one payment and then 29 more received annually), a lump sum payment of $780.5 million has been chosen by the winners. This will now be subject to federal and state taxes

The two players had an agreement to share any winnings they had. Never in a million years did they expect it would be such a large sum they’d share.

With the winners remaining anonymous, all the Illinois Lottery could say is that they must be “absolutely over the moon’ with their win. That’s probably the understatement of the year.

The lottery officials added that the Mega Millions winners have been getting plenty of help in learning how to cope with such a big win. That has included working with professional legal and financial advisors.

Harold Mays is the Director of the Illinois Lottery. Speaking about the Mega Millions win, he said; “These winners are now in the enviable position of deciding what to do with their newfound fortune,” said Illinois Lottery Director Harold Mays.

The Mega Millions jackpot hadn’t been won since April 15. There had been 29 draws in a row without a winner. Finally, the two Illinois residents were able to match 13-36-45-57-67 and the Mega Ball in the July 29 draw.

There could be some more big lottery winners in the coming days. The Mega Millions top prize for the Friday September 23 draw is up to $301 million.

In Europe, the elusive SuperEnalotto jackpot (not won since May 2021) will be 275.3 million euros on Thursday. On Friday, there’s a EuroMillions top prize of £169 million.
